Adverbial phrases e.g. He whispered slowly, glancing anxiously, at the door of the room as the clock struck twelve (manner, place, time)

Have a look at these tables with sentences using commas in different ways.

In the first table can you swap the sentence round so that it starts with a subordinate clause.

E.g.

The kitten waited by its bowl because it was hungry.

Becomes

As the kitten was hungry, it waited by its bowl.

Have a go at the rest of them independently.

On the second table see if you can write your own versions of the sentences given using the commas in the correct place.

Grammar focus: Adverbial phrases (15 mins)

Finish these adverbial phrases thinking about the manner, place and time the character is doing it in. The first one has been done for you.

Remember our focus in this unit is suspense:

He whispered slowly, glancing anxiously at the door of the room as the clock struck twelve.

He whispered threateningly,

He whispered quickly,

He whispered sadly,

He whispered intently,

Listen to the video of sounds. Draw in pencil what it makes you think of, use shading to create effect. Afterwards use a pen to add descriptive words to what you have drawn. Use a thesaurus to improve your choice of vocabulary. (15 mins)

Write a setting description using the picture you drew and the words you came up with in the previous task. Remember a shortburst is your chance to be as creative and imaginative as possible.
